Reading Group 1: Emergent Readers

Target Audience: Pre-K to Early Kindergarten

Focus: Early literacy readiness with strong emphasis on sound awareness, print concepts, and phonics foundations

Approach: Zoo-Phonics + Introductory Orton-Gillingham

Phonological Awareness Skills

  • Awareness of larger units of sound including:
    – Rhyming (recognizing and generating rhymes)
    – Onset and rime awareness (beginning consonant sounds vs. the rest of the word)
  • Oral language activities focused on hearing and playing with sounds before letters are introduced

Phonemic Awareness Skills (subset of phonological awareness focused on individual phonemes)

  • Identifying and isolating individual sounds (phonemes) in words
  • Blending phonemes to form words (e.g., /c/ /a/ /t/ → “cat”)
  • Segmenting phonemes to break words into sounds (e.g., “dog” → /d/ /o/ /g/)
  • Manipulating phonemes by adding, deleting, or substituting sounds (introductory level)

Concepts of Print

  • Understanding print carries meaning
  • Book handling: parts of a book, reading directionality (left to right, top to bottom)
  • Distinguishing letters, words, and sentences
  • Spaces between words and punctuation recognition
  • Tracking print with 1:1 correspondence during reading

Letters and Sounds

  • Identifying uppercase and lowercase letters and their corresponding sounds
  • Multisensory letter learning through Zoo-Phonics: animal cues, gestures, and movement
  • Early Orton-Gillingham techniques: tactile and visual letter formation

High-Frequency Words

  • Introduce simple sight words (I, see, the, a, like)
  • Use visual supports, chants, and interactive games for recognition and recall

 Blending and Segmenting

  • Blend onset and rime segments orally
  • Segment simple CVC words using manipulatives and tapping
  • Use Elkonin boxes and finger tapping as visual-auditory aids

Encoding and Decoding

  • Begin decoding simple phonetic words (CVC) through blending sounds
  • Encoding words using letter-sound knowledge (spelling simple words)
  • Use kinesthetic and tactile methods (letter tiles, writing, tracing)

Word Families

  • Introduce basic word families (-at, -an, -op, -it)
  • Word ladders, rhyming games, and sorting activities to reinforce patterns

Using Contextual Clues

  • Use picture clues and sentence repetition to infer unknown words
  • Model questioning strategies: “What word makes sense here?”

Listening and Comprehension

  • Answer WH questions based on stories
  • Retell stories using pictures
  • Predict outcomes using illustrations

Guided Reading Strategies

  • Picture walks, choral and echo reading
  • Use predictable texts for confidence building

 Reading Materials

  • Zoo-Phonics emergent readers
  • Predictable and patterned texts
  • High-frequency word books

Reading Group 2: Foundational Readers

Target Audience: Kindergarten to Grade 2

Focus: Strengthening decoding, encoding, fluency, and comprehension skills

Approach:Explicit, structured Orton-Gillingham method

Phonological Awareness Skills

  • Reinforce rhyming and onset-rime manipulation
  • Use oral language games to strengthen sound awareness before and during phonics instruction

Phonemic Awareness Skills

  • Blend and segment phonemes in increasingly complex words (CCVC, CVCC)
  • Phoneme manipulation: adding, deleting, substituting phonemes in words
  • Use phoneme mapping, tapping, and Elkonin boxes for multisensory practice

Concepts of Print

  • Advanced print features: sentence structure, punctuation, paragraphing
  • Recognize features like headings, dialogue marks, and text organization

Letters and Sounds (Reinforcement)

  • Mastery of letter-sound correspondences including vowel teams, digraphs, and r-controlled vowels
  • Multisensory review and drill of phonemes and graphemes

High-Frequency Words

  • Master grade-level sight words (Dolch, Fry lists)
  • Use “red word” strategies for irregular words (OG method)
  • Incorporate words into writing and reading fluency practice

 Blending and Segmenting

  • Blend longer phoneme sequences (including multisyllabic words)
  • Segment words for spelling with support (Elkonin boxes, tapping)
  • Daily practice in reading and spelling

 Encoding and Decoding

  • Spelling dictated words and sentences based on phonics instruction
  • Use OG multisensory techniques for accurate phoneme-grapheme mapping

Word Families

  • Expand knowledge to larger and more complex word families (-ake, -ight, -est)
  • Sorting and word building activities for pattern recognition

Using Contextual Clues

  • Use sentence meaning, grammar, and illustrations to identify unfamiliar words
  • Encourage rereading and self-correction: “Does that make sense?”
  • Model strategies for using synonyms, definitions, and prior knowledge

Reading Fluency

  • Develop accuracy, speed, and prosody through repeated reading and partner reading
  • Use poetry and reader’s theater for expression practice

Comprehension Strategies

  • Identify story elements: characters, setting, problem/solution
  • Summarize, predict, infer meaning from text
  • Use graphic organizers for deeper understanding

Comprehension Strategies

  • Identify story elements: characters, setting, problem/solution
  • Summarize, predict, infer meaning from text
  • Use graphic organizers for deeper understanding

Guided and Independent Reading

  • Decodable texts aligned to phonics progression
  • Small group instruction targeting individual needs
  • Independent reading with comprehension follow-ups

Reading Materials

  • Orton-Gillingham-aligned decodable readers
  • High-frequency word and word family readers
  • Controlled texts and early chapter books
